Intumescent coatings expand to protect steel structures from fire damage.
THE CHALLENGE
The main contractors were refurbishing a commercial building and converting it into a supermarket. As a part of this renovation and in line with BS476 fire safety standards, the new steel beams required intumescent fire protection with a decorative finish.
THE SOLUTION
The steel beams were blasted and primed off-site and then installed into the building, ready for coating.
An intumescent coating was applied with airless spray to most of the structure. Where the access to the preinstalled beams was limited, hand application was used to ensure the beams were totally coated. Once this layer had cured, a compatible topcoat was applied to achieve the bright white finish that was required by the client.
THE RESULTS
The project was successfully completed on time over 3 days, achieving the desired quality and DFT requirements for all beams. The clients’ expectations exceeded and were particularly impressed with the quality of work achieved, as well as the tidiness and professionalism of the staff.
